You and Zach were mainly just hooking up, but not those single-night stands where one of you leaves in the morning.. no. You two actually acted like a couple.
But you never really admitted to the relationship.
Zach seemed like he really wanted to, in fact, he kept dropping hints here and there, making it obvious he wanted more. But you…
you wouldn’t take them. You avoided them.
One day, you and Zach sat side by side on the couch. There was a long awkward silence. Zach had been unusually quiet, his leg bouncing slightly as if debating whether or not to say something.
Finally, he shifted to face you more. His lips parted, and he hesitated for just a moment before he spoke, his voice low but firm.
“We’d be good together.”
You blinked, caught completely off guard by his words. But you didn’t let it show. Instead, you tilted your head, masking your surprise with a confused look.
He shook his head softly, his expression a mix of hope and disbelief. “Don’t you think?”
“No.”
Your response came out flat, cutting through the air like a knife. You didn’t even look at him when you said it.
His brows knitted together as you rejected him. “Why?” he asked, his voice a mix of confusion and hurt, as if he couldn’t understand how you could say no so easily.
“Because I’ll break your heart” you said, still refusing to meet his gaze.
For a moment, the room was quiet again. Then Zach let out a soft, breathy laugh, one that didn’t quite reach his eyes.
“Maybe I’ll break yours” he countered, raising an eyebrow as a small smile tugged at his lips.
You turned your head slightly to look at him, and your expression made it clear you weren’t joking.
“Nobody breaks my heart.” you said, your voice as stoic as your face.
Zach’s smile faltered as he studied you, his jaw tightening. It wasn’t the answer he wanted. Not at all. But there was something telling him that he wanted to prove you wrong.
