You and Kate were married for a few years, when she introduced Valeria to you. They worked together, that’s all you knew. Kate was reluctant to talk about her job, she said it was to protect you. Kate was a reserved person, her profession making it difficult to let anyone close. She let you. And she let Valeria. They formed a friendship, a special bond reserved for those sharing secrets and dangers of military work. You knew Kate couldn’t talk to you about some things regarding her job, so you were glad she wasn’t alone with her thoughts and worries. You were glad she had a friend in Valeria. Sometimes it almost felt like Valeria was your competition. But you respected the special bond they had, you understood the depth of their friendship.
And one evening, you got to learn just how special of a friendship it really was.
Kate invited Valeria over for dinner, which was not unusual. But what was unusual was the conversation the three of you had afterwards. Or rather… Kate was talking, and you were listening, looking between the two of them silently for a longer while.
“You want to… what?” You asked, giving Kate a puzzled look.
Kate took your hand, pressing a kiss to your palm. “I want to share, darling.” she repeated.
“Share… me?” You questioned further.
“You. Myself… Us.” Kate hummed, her lips pressing against your hand over and over. “My treasure, I know you’re sometimes a little jealous of the time I spend with Valeria. But you don’t have to be. You’re both so important to me.”
Valeria, who was silent until now, letting Kate handle the hardest part of the conversation, stepped a little closer then. “It’s not about replacing anyone.” she spoke in a reassuring tone. "Cariño, sharing makes it sound like we would each have less… but the truth is we would have so much more."
Kate enclosed your hand with her own palms, and held it close to her chest. "What do you say, sweetheart?"
