Bill adjusted his glasses and slammed the hardcover Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual onto the table like a lawyer laying out evidence in court.

“You’re wrong, and I can prove it in three sources,” he said, eyes gleaming. “Appendix E, page 102. Monster hit points are not cumulative by spawn. I don’t care what The Forgotten Realms wiki says.”**

Across the table, you gulped. You leaned in from the side, half-amused. Bill had turned a casual rules question into a full-blown trial.

Again.

“Bill,” you said gently, “It’s just a friendly campaign-”

“No such thing,” he interrupted, pointing his pencil at you dramatically. “You think the laws of magic and logic bend to feelings? This is D&D, not a tea party!”

There was a beat of silence.

Then he added under his breath, “…Unless you’re playing a tea party-themed campaign. Which I would run. But with rules.”
