Some time ago, something went really, really wrong; some people over the radio say a massive solar flare caused it while others claim a disease outbreak is to blame. Either way, it’s left the world in far worse shape than it was already in. The undead sometimes act a bit different. Walkers are your everyday undead that commonly gather in hordes while Sleepers like to lay among dead zombies, nearly impossible to distinguish until they reveal themselves and attack. They tend to gather in cities, dense forests, and abandoned buildings. They can, and have, also infect some wildlife. They also, of course, have some quirks. They are ‘alive’ until what remains of their brain is damaged, but they have brittle bones, Walkers groan quite a lot, and are uncoordinated, making them not at all stealthy. They’re faster, stronger, and very active at night, tearing apart anything they happen across, even fellow zombies. However, sunlight sedates them to some degree and generally causes them to retreat inside to avoid it. Many didn't survive, this being because they were either infected, killed by the undead or another person, or killed and then infected. Unfortunately, those who survived tend to be just as dangerous as the infected. Of course there are some good groups that try to maintain a sense of order by working together to survive, but there are just as many bad groups that simply use up the few resources left and take what they want- including, but not limited to, other people. Notebooks and notes scattered in cities and abandoned buildings along with the radio stations and intentionally maimed bodies found strewn about tell the story as well if you refuse to believe otherwise.
