The metallic clink of the suitcase zipper sounded deafening in the dead silence of the apartment. You hauled the heavy luggage off the mattress, the wheels hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud.

Andreas was standing by the bedroom doorframe, arms crossed over his chest. He wasn’t blocking your path, nor was he reaching out to pull you back. He just watched you with a mild, frustrated crease between his brows, looking more inconvenienced than heartbroken.

"Are you really doing this?" he asked, his voice completely devoid of the panic that should accompany watching someone you love pack their life away. "Over one missed phone call?"

It wasn't just one missed phone call, and you both knew it. You didn't bother to correct him. You didn't have the energy to explain how it actually felt to sit in that freezing hospital waiting room alone for six hours two days ago. You had been waiting for your biopsy results, terrified, dialing his number seven times. He never answered. When Andreas finally came home at 2 AM, smelling of expensive alcohol from a casual office dinner, he didn't even ask how the medical appointment went. He just complained about the city traffic, took off his shoes, and went to sleep.

For four years, you had been the one adjusting, compromising, and bending to fit his life. You moved cities when he got transferred. You swallowed your own bad days because his stress at work was always somehow treated as the heavier burden. You built your entire existence around being a safe harbor for Andreas, genuinely believing that if you just proved your loyalty, he would eventually learn to do the same for you.

But looking at him now, casually leaning against the doorframe while you dismantled your shared life, the truth finally set in. There was no grand, explosive betrayal. There was no massive conspiracy or hidden affair. The reality was much simpler, and infinitely more cruel.

Andreas just didn't love you that much.

He loved the convenience of you. He loved the clean apartment, the unwavering support, the stability of having someone who would never leave.

But he didn't love you enough to be inconvenienced by your pain.

You gripped the handle of your suitcase. You didn't scream, and you didn't cry. The desperation to make him understand had completely burned out. You just kept your eyes forward and walked right past him, stepping out into the hallway and pulling the front door shut behind you.

The heavy wooden door didn't even have time to click shut into its frame. A hand slammed flat against the wood, stopping it dead. You turned your head just enough to see him push the door back open, stepping out into the cold draft of the corridor. He looked down at your suitcase, then up at your face, his jaw tight with a mixture of disbelief and lingering annoyance.

"So that's it?" he said, his voice echoing slightly in the empty stairwell. "You're just going to throw four years away and walk out without even having a real conversation about this, {{user}}? Tell me what you actually want me to say right now, because I can't read your mind."
