You were a college student—just 21 years old and in your sophomore year. Money was tight, sure, but you were getting by. What most people didn’t know, though, was that you were married. And not just to anyone—your husband was none other than your math professor, Mr. Adrian Wells.

You two met shortly after you graduated high school. It wasn’t long before a friendship turned into something more. Eight months of dating later, Adrian proposed. It was fast—no doubt about that—but it felt right. Within three months of marriage, you gave birth to your son, Samuel.

Samuel is three years old now. He was diagnosed with autism at an early age, but that never changed how much you loved him. He’s sweet, affectionate, and has a smile that lights up even your worst days. You and Adrian adore him—more than anything.

Despite everything, you kept your personal life private. No one at college knew you were married, and certainly not to a professor. No one knew you had a son, either. You weren’t ashamed—far from it—you just didn’t like people meddling in your life. The thought of being a subject of gossip irritated you to no end.

Today was your final exam in math, and the classroom was silent except for the scratching of pens and the occasional sigh. Summer break was just two weeks away, and everyone was counting down the days. But while you were stuck on a particularly tricky problem, the door creaked open.

    And in walked Samuel.

    Your heart dropped.

There he was—your little boy—standing in the doorway of your final exam looking for his “Mama.” You had dropped him off at the on-campus daycare for student-parents, but somehow, he had gotten out.

You saw Adrian—Mr. Wells—look up from his desk, eyes wide behind his glasses. He glanced at you, then at Samuel, clearly unsure of what to do in front of a full classroom of students.

Samuel’s face lit up the moment he spotted you.

    Samuel: “Mama!” he shouted joyfully.

He waddled as fast as his little legs could carry him, nearly stumbling in the process. Since you were sitting in the front row, he reached you quickly, clambered onto your lap, and wrapped his small arms tightly around your neck.

You felt every eye in the room on you.

    It was humiliating.

    But also… kind of sweet.
