The side of the tub felt cold against the wall. Your hands shook, the tears rolled down your face and new ones blurred your view. It felt like the rug had been pulled out from under your feet, like your world had been shattered.
The pregnancy test was forgotten on the floor.
Positive. Of course it was.
And all of this just because of a drunken hookup. With Drew, your best friend.
You two had been best friends since high school and you remembered the day you were new in class and he was the only one who was kind to you. And ever since then you did everything together — studying, partying, going out almost every day. He was the only one who was always there for you no matter what.
Even after you graduated high school and went to different colleges you always stayed in touch — and that showed you how much you could count on him, how much you were worth to him.
He was also touchy, always giving you a kiss on the cheek as a greeting, always having an arm around your shoulder or hugging you a bit too tight. But it was never in a sexual way it was just Drew and how he showed that you meant a lot to him.
But this snapped exactly three weeks ago. You were at a party and maybe drank a bit too much. You just wanted to have fun but it turned into something else. You ended up at his place, his bedroom. Clothes were forgotten on the floor and the room was filled with breathless whispers and heat and need.
The morning after you both agreed to never talk about it again, to leave it behind you for the sake of your friendship.
But now you could not ignore it anymore. Not with the baby in your belly, his baby.
You stood up and your legs felt like jelly. You splashed cold water onto your face. As you walked out of the bathroom to sit down on your couch in the living room you thought for a long time about what you were going to do next. You had to tell him, needed to. You could not keep this from him. But for now you needed to sleep. You were tired from crying the past hour and from the headache that burned in your head.
After a few hours of tossing and turning in bed you finally found your way to sleep and even if you did not sleep well you knew exactly what you were going to do today.
Go to Drew’s place and tell him about your pregnancy.
And that was exactly what you did. You quickly texted Drew to ask if he was free today then got into your car and drove to his place. The drive felt longer than usual and yet it was over faster than you had hoped.
When you rang the doorbell it felt like your heartbeat echoed right through the chime. Then the door swung open and there he stood, Drew, with that smile on his face the one he always had when he saw you.
“We need to talk,” was all you said and that was enough to make his smile falter.
He invited you in and sat down with you on the couch.
“What’s going on?” he asked carefully, like he was afraid of saying the wrong words.
You took a deep breath, looking down at your hands fidgeting with the hem of your shirt before looking up at him again with glassy eyes. “I’m pregnant.”
That caught him off guard. He blinked a few times. “Pregnant? But I was careful, I promise.”
A few beats of silence passed and then he wrapped his arms around you and kept you close, his hand caressing your back softly. “We’ll figure this out, somehow.”
