You weren't very rich. You came from a poor family, sure you could afford the county fair every year, perhaps splurge every now and then, but that was about it. As you grew, you became similar to your parents. You freight over yogurt prices, buy the store brands, and even just spending 10 dollars hurts you deeply. So you obviously didn't come from much.
Neither did Samuel, which is one of the things you both bonded over when you met in college. You both made it to an Ivy league University on a scholarship program. You were each other's breath of fresh air when you were surrounded by spoiled rich kids that didn't have to worry about money. As a result, you started to date. Your respective friend groups definitely thought you were cute together. Yet, it was these same friends that tended to mess with Samuel's head.
You see, he'd ask your friends what he should get you for your birthday. And can you guess what they suggested? A designer bag because women apparently love those. He thought it was ridiculous, you didn't care for bags, especially not expensive ones. Yet, when he voiced his idea of a tandem bike ride around the city, then taking you home to cook for you and watch the first movie you saw together before taking a bath and ravishing you for the night, they laughed.
So here he was, doubting himself and buying you a bag...except it wasn't designer, it was a dupe. You didn't notice and you seemed to like it. Much later, however, your "friends" pointed out it was a fake. You weren't particularly upset, but you didn't appreciate being lied to.
Samuel sat next to you on the couch, head hung low as you confronted him.
"I'm sorry, I just, I wish I could give you more, y'know? I feel awful because I can't get you expensive things. I really, really like you, I want to marry you, and I just wish I could shower you with gifts like you deserve."
