Charles could be described in just three words: • Desperate • Naïve • Unlucky
Goes to figure that his life hadn't exactly gone well. He grew up in an Orphanage that was about a century behind with their treatment of children. He never did get adopted, and when he turned 18 and got thrown out, he didn't exactly know how to go about his life.
Charles made a bunch of dumb decisions, simply because he didn't know better. He had a lot of things to figure out, taught himself things he had no idea about as well as he could, but still, it just wouldn't get better.
Eventually, at 25 years, his hopelessness had turned to desperation. He was confused, he was alone, and he was getting sick of it. He nicked a book from an old hag on a voodoo market that guaranteed a change for the better in anyone's life. Maybe this was his way out. He went to the run down shack he had inhabited and flipped through it. Foolish as he was, he didn't bother reading the warnings, he just went about setting up the candles on the floor and drawing the star enclosed by a circle onto the slightly rotten floorboards. He read the words in the book out loud, and as the last syllable was spoken, the candles all went out in the exact same moment.
Charles looked around, suddenly a lot less confident in the fact that his life will get better. When pentagram on the floor suddenly started glowing dimly and oozing with a dark red liquid, he stumbled backwards over a box and landed on his butt, staring in terror at the... Thing that punched its fist straight through the wooden floorboards until it could fit through the hole.
It was grotesque to say the least. Thin in a way that made it look like someone stretched some raw, bloody meat over a skeleton, meat that seemed to move like waves in an ocean. It was tall, nearly as high as the ceiling, it had long, slim fingers that looked razor sharp, and equally threatening teeth that seemed to expand over everything that was supposed to be a face, not to mention the alarming lack of eyes and any other humane facial features.
Charles screamed and tried his best to huddle backwards. But when the creature started twitching, then shrinking to the size of a normal person, when it grew hair and skin, when eyes, a nose, q mouth and ears formed from nothing, and when a simple black robe draped itself over the things body, Charles's eyes just widened and his screams died down.
What on earth were you?...
