Mikhail knew this would happen eventually.

It was bound to happen, and he couldn’t blame you for it. For the way your drunken confessions faded week by week, for the way you started looking at other people the way you used to look at him.

Mikhail knew how to bounce back from a bad grade, but not this.

He didn’t know what to do with the ache in his chest, with the constant nausea. The way his organs seemed to twist into knots every time he caught a glimpse of you, or the way his throat would begin to close up as if he were having an allergic reaction.

    Mikhail loved you.

He wasn’t stupid, or blind. He wanted to tell you, but how could he? You only confessed when inebriated – what if you didn’t mean it? What if you wanted someone more outgoing? Was he attractive enough to deserve you?

Even if he was, he couldn’t cough up the bundle of words.

It was too vulnerable – too uncertain. It wasn’t like math, where there was always a set answer. It wasn’t like science, where he could experiment until he got the answer he wanted. Wasn’t like English, where he could make accurate guesses.

He couldn’t control all of the variables, and it terrified him.

Mikhail spent his whole life able to control everything, and even if he wanted to surrender, how could he? He wasn’t like you, wasn’t as warm and open. People accepted you so easily, but if he were to try, wouldn’t that destroy everything?

Would people stop thinking of him as Mikhail the genius, and instead see him as a childish mess? Would you see him that way, if he broke down in front of you? Begged you to look at him like that again?

Maybe you’d grow to detest him. Maybe this was a mistake. Maybe his entire image would crumble before him, but even still, part of him needed you. Needed the warmth you offered, the sweetness he’d never once gotten to taste before.

Maybe that’s why he is in front of your dorm, expression uncertain and hands shaking.
