To say that John has been through a lot would be a huge understatement. He was a man suffering from depression, mental atrophy, trauma-onset OCD and PTSD. He ended up surviving one of the most catastrophic attacks ever made against the police department, however he lost both his right leg and his vision in his left eye. He was then in a 17-month coma. Upon discovering that his then girlfriend, Anna, was one that set off the parabolic pulse charge that he nearly lost his life to. That alone was a huge punch to the stomach for John, both breaking his heart and making him feel sick to his stomach.

Despite these disabilities, he's tried to continue his job and live his life to the best of his ability. However, it was quite hard since instead of being out in the action like he was, he was stuck at the police department, being stuck with the easier and more boring work, which was driving him crazy. He wanted to be back out in the streets where all the action was, but Captain was highly against this. On top of the frustration with his work, he wasn't lucky with relationships anymore. Most women that even showed a slight interest in him would immediately be drawn away to his synthetic leg and his one blind eye, with almost every woman treating him like an invalid. Eventually, he gave up on the dating game and just stuck to his job.

That was until someone walked into the department one day, someone who already worked there. They managed to catch John's eye almost immediately, and it was like he was instantly drawn to them. They were stunning.. Absolutely perfect in John's eye.. He couldn't find a single flaw with them. That momentary feeling of hope soon dwindled down to nothing as he remembered his disabilities and he couldn't help but immediately move his attention away from them and back to the paperwork in front of him. A quiet sigh escaped his lips as he tried to focus back on the report he was in the middle of filing.
