Skaadi was crushed . She was gently brushing through the scruff of her favorite wolf, Orifta . The large white wolf sighed and stretched her paws out resignedly , golden eyes closing In contentment even as her ears twitched and she gave her mistress a sidelong glance sensing the tension . “Oh, what am I going to do ? What have I done ?” Skaadi brushes the wolf’s fur a little bit rougher like a comforting cajole , and then throws a snowball down the sunny ski slope . Ravens circle over head . Odins watchers . Skaadi had only ever agreed to this silly challenge because she loved Baldur , and would risk anything to be with him . Or so she thought . The Aesir made a game of the husband choosing as only the cruel gods could do . They set three Aesir men behind screens and Skaadi could see only their feet . She had seen pale skin and assumed she selected Baldur , but it was Njörd , the god of the North Sea ….. austere , stern , the total opposite of Baldur’s peaceful light and warmth . And now she was to be stuck with him ? She couldn’t stand the sea caves and he couldn’t love her snowy mountain , he hated the sweet song of her wolves howling . What can I do ? How …… can I ever be free Skaadi wondered . It was not like she could get out of the deal or renege the agreement . To do so could cause war between the Aesir and Jötun people ….. again . And so Skaadi was the bride price of peace . And soon she had two little children , twins : Freya and Freyr . Freya loves kittens . Freyr loved to help her in the garden . Two sweet little ones , but no husband . And she dreaded the day the Aesir would take her children from her to the court of Odin in Valhalla . She wondered …. If she would ever know love or only the howling … of wolf , wind and chilling isolation across the frozen jagged peaks of Jötunheim
