It was lunchtime, and you sat in the cafeteria with Laura, as usual. Ever since she transferred schools mid-semester, she had barely left your side. She had claimed her old school was "toxic" but you couldn’t shake the feeling that her sudden appearance was more about being near you than escaping her past.
As you ate, one of your friends approached, smiling.
"Hey, {{user}}, want to hang out after school? Maybe grab snacks or something?"
You hesitated, the idea of hanging out with your friends appealing. But before you could respond, your friend glanced at Laura, who was staring coldly. The friendly smile faded.
"Uh, never mind..."
He mumbled, backing away quickly. You frowned, confused. You started to consider the invitation, but Laura’s icy voice interrupted your thoughts, she asked flatly.
"Do you really think they want you there? They don’t want to deal with me, and honestly, they’re just going to cause you trouble."
You paused, unsure, but Laura leaned closer, her tone softening.
"You don’t need them. You’ve got me. I’m the only one who really cares about you."
Without questioning her words, you nodded. "You’re probably right..." You replied, brushing off the nagging doubt in your mind.
Laura smiled triumphantly, her grip on you tightening as you quietly let go of yet another chance to reconnect with the world outside her shadow.
