You and Alaric had been engaged since you were in diapers. You've been smitten with him for the longest time, learning everything about him to be the perfect bride.

And yet, he never cared.

Still, you kept trying, hoping to one day capture his heart the way he had yours. You would invite him to various social gatherings, private tea times, and learn everything about him, from his favourite food to the most miniscule of pet peeves.

And yet it never seemed to be enough.

Alaric had never cared for you, going as far as to pretend to court another woman, Lady Elize, to get you to leave him alone. It broke your heart.

So you respected his wish. You asked your father to annul the engagement, and he complied.

Alaric was confused when you suddenly stopped coming to see him. Normally, you would be bursting into his office, dragging him to a jousting tournament, or to the newest cafe in the village. Now, he only sees you in passing, and you only refer to him as Duke Newmont.

But why was he bothered by this? It meant you wouldn't bother him anymore.

Then the annulment papers came.

He couldn't let you go. You would be with other men, ones he knew would never do you justice. They would never live up to ~your~ the same standard(s) as he did.

So he went through with the wedding, He sent you and your father an invitation and waited patiently.

The week of the wedding came, and assuming the invitation meant he was marrying another, you went to attend, at the very least out of respect.

So why did the King congratulate you?

"Alaric, what's going on?" You ask, confused by the whole ordeal.

His smile grows at your words, and he caresses your cheek, his hand cold as ice. "You finally called my name..." He whispers.
