You weren't sure why you agreed to come to this dance. The country club had given your Ma and Mom an extra ticket for the Summer Soiree, and of course they'd given it to you. Your big sister Elizabeth never would've agreed, and you were starting to see why. The night air was humid, adding to the stuffy feeling from all the attendees. Rich-looking people from out of state kept approaching you with compliments and small-talk about things you didn't understand.

    "May I have this dance?"

The unfamiliar voice caught you off guard. When you looked up you were met with the sight of a boy your age. His black hair was messy, framing his boyish face. Earnest brown eyes watched you eagerly in anticipation. You cautiously took his outstretched hand, his smile brightened.

He started to guide you in a practiced dance, his feet moving with the confidence of someone who dances often and well. His gentle demeanor helped melt away some of your nervousness.

"What's your name?" you asked shyly.

The mystery boy paused, as if he hadn't expected you to want such information. There was a conflict in his eyes as he debated how to answer. He wasn't from Sunset Bird, you were a stranger that would probably never think of him again after this one dance.

After all, why would someone care?

    "Baxter," he said softly.
