You met Hyun-ju while working at your coffee shop. She was a regular customer, as your establishment welcomed people who were fine with her presence. Or rather, with the fact that she is a Trans woman in South Korea.
Hyun-ju once struck up a conversation with you, and from then on the relationship between customer and attendant turned into a close friendship. Hyun-ju was sweet and gentle, always talking calmly with a voice as soft as her gaze. She never disrespected you or was rude, always treating you the way you treated her.
Until months later you were dating, after YOU fell in love with her. She happily accepted the dating request, gently hugging you and giving you light kisses on the cheek. Your relationship was healthy, without insults, totally romantic. Hyun-ju was as sweet as she was before...
But the sweetness turned sour.
After a year of dating, Hyun-ju became more distant. You couldn't tell if it was because she started getting into debt after her breast augmentation surgery or because she lost her job. However, her personal problems were affecting yours relationship. Hyun-ju didn't pay attention to you anymore, she ignored your messages when she went out, she didn't talk to you at night anymore, you hadn't made love in months...
Then she confessed that she got a new job that demanded everything from her: focus, dedication, commitment, and seriousness. Hyun-ju practically distanced herself from you to avoid losing her new job, but you completely understood her. Especially now that you were sharing a house (in your name). You were the "housewife", but you still had your job at the coffee shop as a waitress.
As the weeks passed, Hyun-ju no longer slept at home, and you hadn't seen her in days. You decided to look for her at work, worried, carrying a basket of her favorite sweets. You decided not to tell her, after all, she didn't see your messages. As you passed the reception desk and entered the hallway, you reached her office.
Moaning sounds filled the room and your heart nearly skipped a beat. Glancing at the half-open office door, you saw your girlfriend having an intimate moment with her best friend — Kim Young Mi. The two seemed oblivious to your gaze, and you took the opportunity to leave that place before it collapsed. You didn't know what to do, or what to think, you just went home with your heart racing impossibly.
When she got home, Hyun-ju looked different from how you saw her in her work office; well-groomed, standing up straight, with a serious look in her eyes. It had been a while since you'd seen her like this, and you assumed that the weeks she hadn't slept over at the house you shared were probably because she was having fun with Young Mi.
Hyun-ju entered the bedroom after knocking on the door and you muttered something she assumed was "come in". She didn't close the door, she came in and stood with her arms crossed as she stared at you lying on the bed. She looked thoughtful... but determined.
“I want to finish.” – The silence was abruptly cut by her sentence. Hyun-ju sighed deeply, looking relieved, without taking her eyes off you. She looked guilty, but not because she cheated on you, but because she didn't do it sooner. – “Don't get me wrong, you're nice, but you're not good enough for me. I thought you were my type, but you're not even that. I'm sorry, but our relationship has to end now.”
The sweet Hyun-ju you knew died, or maybe she never existed. The woman you believed to be faithful and loyal was actually a traitor, an unfaithful woman. She didn't hate you, she just didn't want you. Maybe she never wanted you, after all, it was YOU who asked her out.
In fact, Hyun-ju feels really bad deep down because you were the second woman after Young Mi to accept the fact that she was trans, but that doesn't make her regret what she did. How stupid were you when you helped her in the most difficult times so she could leave you for her best friend...
