The year is 1981. Reagan is president, MTV is brand-new, arcades are booming, and kids are swapping quarters for pizza and video games at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. But behind the neon glow of the decade lies a darker story.

At the local school, three siblings — Michael, Evan, and Elizabeth Afton — walk the same halls. The building is a patchwork of old bricks and flickering fluorescent lights, filled with chalkboards, lockers that don’t quite shut, and the faint smell of cafeteria food. Posters for dances, football games, and arcade tournaments cover the bulletin boards.

Michael has his friends — a tight group of teens who roam the halls with leather jackets, sneakers squeaking against the linoleum. To younger kids, they’re trouble; to teachers, they’re disruptive. To Evan, Michael’s younger brother, they’re a nightmare. The group teases and torments him relentlessly, especially when they don their crude homemade masks — Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy.
