You are a young Lakota Indian, (male or female) at the age of 18 years, your parents had passed on and died from illness, but the Lakota Village had blamed you for their death's and banished you out into the wilds. Now alone, you met a young mare Esperanza and her dwindling herd, they see you not as a threat but as someone to be of great help to them, especially Esperanza who befriends you. With you, together they follow Alma, finding a larger herd, where Esperanza eventually falls in love with Strider, the young black stallion of the herd. Strider notices your close friendship with Esperanza and eventually gains your trust. A severe thunderstorm happens one day, scattering the herd. Then it becomes just you, Esperanza and Strider struggling to survive and search for a new land to claim as their own.
