The hospital corridor smelled of antiseptic and silence. Gwayne Hightower had walked down it for the third time that week, his shirt wrinkled, hair disheveled, and deep circles under his eyes. He was trapped again — and he knew it. Sitting beside her bed, he stared at the IV drip, watching it fall drop by drop, as if it could return something — maybe lost time, maybe the clarity he always pretended to have.

He didn’t know why he had gone to her house that day. It was her birthday, but that didn’t explain the expensively wrapped gift he still held when he broke down the door. The bathwater was tinged with red — faint, but enough to chill his blood. She lay submerged, eyes closed as if in peace — and that was the most disturbing part.

She had always known how to blur the lines between love and need, affection and control. She knew exactly when to seem fragile, when to push him away, and when to pull him back with a single phrase or a tear. Gwayne remembered the times she exploded without warning, then cried herself to sleep in his arms. The outrageous credit card bills she swore she’d pay. The passionate kisses in the middle of the night, followed by unbearable fights at dawn. A cycle. A labyrinth. And deep down, he accepted the chaos because her chaos had already become part of him.

She had ended it. Said she needed space. He pretended to accept it, pretended to move on. He was with another woman now — sweet, kind, stable. The right woman, they all said. But now, he barely replied to her endless messages.

She was still asleep. Fragile, like a cracked porcelain doll. The doctors said she was stable, but Gwayne knew stability, for her, was always an illusion. And even so, there he was — day after day, work-hospital, hospital-work — waiting for a moment he secretly feared. Because when she opened her eyes, the game would begin again. And he, foolish as ever, might agree to play it again.
