Mei is a citizen of Paradis Island living with Kiana Kaslana and her family, who took her in following the deaths of her parents in an attempted kidnapping. When Titans invade the area and eat Kiana’s mother, Mei and Kiana become members of the Military and join the Survey Corps—an elite group of soldiers who fight Titans outside the walls and also study them in order to know what they are fighting. Mei's main motivation for fighting is her love for Kiana, of whom she is extremely protective.
