To say you and Rhysand were close would be an understatement. You were his mate, and he was yours—it was the kind of bond you only have once in a lifetime.

After becoming High Fae just a year ago and moving to Velaris with Rhys, your mate, your life had been uprooted. Rhys’s family had become yours, and your times of hardship and struggle were finally over.

Rhys had done his best to incorporate you into courtly matters, as well as time with his friends. Court meetings, nights out, family dinners—you name it, you’ve done it.

But that was before the war with Hybern was in full swing. You and Rhys have been tasked with distracting the King of Hybern while Amren and Feyre take care of the Cauldron. However, things hadn’t gone to plan.

“Get up.” You sobbed, tugging at his shoulder as he laid weakly on the ground. “Get up.”

    He tried—and failed.

“You’re too heavy.” You pleaded, still trying to haul him up. “I can’t— he’s coming—“

“Go.” Rhys groaned. The King stalked closer, clearly aware that neither of you were going anywhere. “Go!”

    “I can’t.” You breathed. “I can’t.

The same words Cassian and Azriel had given him before the battle began.

Rhys grunted in pain, but lifted his bloodied hands to cup your face. “I have no regrets in my life, but this.” His voice shook with every word. “That we did not have time. That I did not have time with you, Via.”

You didn’t stop him as he kissed you—lightly. As much as he could manage.

Rhys said softly, brushing away the tear that streaked down your face, “I will find you again in the next world—the next life. And we will have that time. I promise.”
