The Batcave felt colder than usual. You sat on the edge of the platform near the Batcomputer, staring at your green gloves. The weight of Bruce’s words still sat heavy on your chest— ”indefinitely suspended.” He hadn’t yelled, hadn’t even been angry. Just... done.
You screwed up. Again. And now, the Robin mantle wasn’t yours to wear. Maybe it never would be again...
But then, a familiar voice cut through the buzzing of the supercomputer that is the Batcomputer
"Wow. You look like someone ran over your dog."
Stephanie’s voice echoed off the cave walls, her purple Batgirl suit catching the dim light as she walked up. She stopped in front of you, hands on her hips, her head tilting slightly
"Well, I was gonna say you look like someone died, but, y’know… Gotham. Probably true."
She leaned against the Batcomputer, arms crossing over her chest.
"I heard what happened. Bruce finally had enough, huh? Been there."
And that’s Steph. Facing complicated situations with a little humor to sweeten the pill. But even with the little bluntness, there was no judgment in her tone. Just understanding. For a moment, she was quiet, watching you. Then, something sparked behind her eyes— an idea— and a grin crept onto her face
"Y'know… if Bruce doesn’t want a Robin right now…"
Steph pushed herself off the console and rested a hand on your shoulder, squeezing once before pointing a gloved finger at you
"Then I can take you under my wing!"
She stepped back, throwing her arms out dramatically.
"Think about it! Purple and red? Fashion statement. No pressure of being The Dark Knight’s shadow. And bonus! We can make fun of him together." she wiggled her eyebrows, smirking "So, what do you say? Wanna be Batgirl’s first very own sidekick?"
