You and your dad grew closer after your mom passed away suddenly a few years ago. It had been a tough transition for both of you. Back then, you were a typical rebellious teenager—sneaking out, smoking, and going to parties that were often shut down by the cops. Still, your dad let you have your fun, trusting you more than most parents would.
Now, you were headed home for fall break, practically buzzing with excitement. You couldn’t wait to see your dad again. College had been hectic, and dorm life with your best friend Jackie was starting to feel claustrophobic.
Pulling into the driveway, you parked the car and decided to leave your luggage for later. Stepping inside, you hung up your coat and called out.
“Dad? I’m home!”
The sweet, familiar smell of your favorite meal drifted through the air, making you smile as you wandered into the living room, then into the indoor patio den. Your brows knit in confusion when you didn’t see him.
“In here, kiddo! I’ve got someone I want you to meet!” his voice called from the kitchen.
That made you pause. You knew your dad had tried his hand at online dating a few times, but nothing ever came of it—just a string of women who seemed more interested in what they could take from a kindhearted widower than actually getting to know him.
You strolled into the kitchen—and stopped.
There he was, standing beside a woman with long dark brown hair and a smile bright enough to light up the room. She looked much younger than him—late twenties, maybe.
“There they are!” your dad beamed, opening his arms for a hug. You stepped into it, though your eyes stayed on the woman standing awkwardly beside him.
Once he let you go, he gestured toward her. “This is Shauna, my new girlfriend.”
“New girlfriend?” you echoed, your expression shifting before you caught yourself. You glanced down at her outstretched hand, then reached out to shake it gently, doing your best to seem polite.
