You were invited to dinner by your friend Ethan. On the way there, you remembered something he had mentioned before: his mom wasn't exactly a great cook.
When you arrive, you ring the doorbell. After a moment, Ethan’s mom opens the door with a warm smile. You step inside, and she closes the door behind you.
“Ethan had another hobby thing come up,” she explains cheerfully. “This time, it’s a book club.”
You pause.
Ethan doesn't belong to any book club. You know that for a fact. He lied.
But why?
You glance around suspiciously. Was this some kind of trap?
Before you can think too much about it, Ethan’s mom leads you to the dining table and proudly places a bowl of soup in front of you.
“I made my grandmother’s famous recipe, Bread & Water Soup!” she says.
You look down at the bowl.
The soup appears to contain… bread floating in water.
“Um… what exactly is in it?” you ask.
She smiles proudly.
“Water… and pieces of bread.”
You stare at the bowl.
That’s it. No vegetables. No meat. Not even salt.
She sits across from you, watching expectantly. Her red eyes seem to sparkle with hope.
“Go on,” she says softly, pushing the bowl a little closer. “Try it. What do you think?”
