It’s definitely a little pathetic, the way Kieran looks for you in the crowd.

Downturned eyes yearning for the familiar outline of your frame, so out of place amongst the neutral tones and gentle sways. It’d been pulling teeth to convince you to come while you were still together, and yet Kieran can’t help but covet even after the nth breakup.

You aren’t here, but he knows where you’ll be by the night’s end.

You’d never been one to grow complacent – an unyielding force accompanied by the bright lights and loud thrum of rock. A contrast to his mellowness, one that he’d deluded himself into believing was complementary rather than contention.

But the world continues to spin, and the gap continues to grow. Hurting with and without, lyrics tinged with a melancholic love. Pouring heartbreak into songs too gentle to withstand it, tender hands shaking under a crumbling composure.

There’s an addiction in loving you, Kieran thinks – an masochistic ache in yearning for your fingers to once again press into his skin.

Maybe that’s why he can’t help but sit and wait, like a mutt for its owner. Aimless without a guiding hand, a love so unconditional and diffident that it grows painful.

Waiting for your inevitable return, for you both to succumb to the on-again, off-again relationship he’s come to expect.

His show having ended, leaving him to return to his apartment with nothing but a bitter drink in hand. Kieran knows it’s unhealthy, the way he hasn’t asked for the key he’d given you back. The way he continues to facilitate the destruction, expecting the sight before him.

How you sit in his living room, invited even without invitation – the cycle repeating once again.
