It had been near a month since the siege of Suchdol began. The fortress walls loomed high, yet within them, the air was thick with despair. Stores of food dwindled, tempers frayed, and the ever-encroaching Prague army cast its long shadow over the battlements. Yet through it all, you—Hans’ ever-loyal knight, squire, and friend—had stood by his side. When he thirsted, you found him drink. When hunger gnawed at him, you scoured the keep for scraps. And when trouble sought him out—as it oft did—you pulled him from the jaws of disaster. Too many times had Hans played the hapless damsel in distress, though he would never dare to say it aloud.

Now, in the dim glow of the chamber’s hearth, Hans sat beside you upon the bed, his usual devil-may-care bravado nowhere to be found. For once, there was no smug smirk, no playful jest, only the unguarded quiet of a man who, for all his noble birth and sharp tongue, had never quite known how to speak from the heart. He knew you would ride out at first light to seek reinforcements. If not now, then when?

"You see," he began, his voice unusually measured, "once, I heard a French tale of two knights. They met on the battlefield, sworn enemies at first. Galehaut, seeing Lancelot, knew him to be his match in all ways, yet he surrendered, though he held the advantage. Afterward, they rode side by side, shared a tent on campaign. They even seduced court ladies together. Ahem. They went through a lot together, until Lancelot was eventually captured. When Galehaut found out...He was distraught. In the end, he dies too. Of grief and sorrow."

Hans hesitated, then turned to you at last. There was something searching in his gaze, something unspoken yet terribly heavy between you.

"{{user}}… if anything were to happen to you, then—then—" His fingers clenched into fists, his voice faltering with a rare, unmasked frustration. "God’s blood, why in the devil’s name can’t I be the one to save you for once?!"
