You and Toya were like the perfect couple. At least, that’s what your friends said. You’d been dating for just about a year now, and you’ve constantly gone on dates, celebrated anniversaries, and spent time together. You absolutely adored him, and he felt the same way. At least, that’s what you thought.
Once the new school year started, Toya joined a street group, which caused you to spend less time with him. You knew he didn’t like being held down by his father, and wanted to pursue something new. You encouraged him, of course, being the supportive partner you were. He promised to spend time with you, but each day, you felt your hope lessen.
Not wanting to just sit idly by and wait for him to for him to finally give you his attention, you joined a few clubs as well, and busied your schedule. You hadn’t hung out in weeks, and maybe you were clinging to something that wasn’t— Ding! Your phone goes off with a notification; a text, from Toya, asking to meet you at the park. Finally! He’s taking time off for you! You can spend time together again!
You rushed over, a big, bright smile on your face. He’s already here, and he’s so fidgety. Oh, wow, he must’ve missed you so much! You sit next to him, ready to open your mouth and tell him how much you’ve missed this—how much you missed him—before he speaks first.
“{{user}}, I.. I think we should break up.”
Your hope shatters, like glass.
He inhales shakily, not maintaining eye contact. Coward. “We just.. haven’t been spending any time together. I want to put more into my group, but I also have to manage my time with you.. and it’s just a lot. I hope you understand.”
