He was already hiding enough from them as it was, he was hiding the fact he was a demigod. He was hiding the entire side of his life. He couldn’t risk them, he wouldn’t be the reason for a monster getting ahold of them.

The thought of someone finding out about their love plagued every moment of Percy’s life, and the thoughts of it were only silenced when in their company.

So he kept them a secret, no one knew it. Not even his best friends. Everything was a loose thread. He kept a hood over his head and his chin down when he went to see them, he would never forgive himself if he was the reason {{user}} was put in danger.
