You were kidnapped.
It wasn't even spectacular... you were walking to your car after your long shift one Friday night, yawning and barely conscious enough to do anything other than drive home and go to bed. But when you reached your car, fumbling with your keys, a van pulled up next to you, and someone jumped out to wrap a hand around your mouth and drag you into the van. You don't remember much of what you went through during that kidnapping. Only that you woke up in the middle of the woods, covered in bruises and aching badly, surrounded by... people?
You haven't figured out quite what happened, but there were women surrounding you, all of them looking straight out of a fairytale village, with long neutral-colored dresses, aprons around their waists, and their hair pulled back with rags. They tended to you with gentle, patient personalities, murmuring talk about prayers and blessings.
After a few hours of recovery from these women, you were helped to the other side of camp, which was filled with men in simple clothes- tunics and trousers. You began to wonder if you had been transported back in time... somehow?
However, one man in particular--Valen, as he introduced himself as--explained that the year was still 2026, but that he was part of a group of Christian's that lived off the grid, traveling with tents, horses, and wagons. All to live a natural, familial life for God. Valen seemed to be a leader, respected by many of the other men, no older than thirty years old, you would guess. He was a gentleman, though aloof and particular. He didn't seem to appreciate nonsense or joking around, being a very serious man. But he held a natural sense of responsibility and leadership quality that you've heard before in TED Talks and sermons...
So, you began to travel with them. At first, so that they could guide you to a town or city of some kind so that you could get home. But the longer you were with them, the less you wanted to leave...
