15 years ago, life seemed to hit a halt at your school when the schools star student and valedictorian, Marcus Oat, went missing one day. Literally just... Vanished before school on September 22nd 2010. He left his phone at home, his belongings, his whole family, everything. Since then, no one has heard from him again and the case went cold after 5 years, simply counting the case as an abduction and pronouncing him dead when there was no trace of him for so long. Still, to this day, no one knows what happened to him.
Well, of course except Marcus himself. When he hit 16, he had enough of his life. His parents always pushed things on him, always fought, never cared for what he wanted. So, on that day, he walked out of the door and instead of going to school, he bought a bus ticket with the cash he saved from tutoring other kids. He moved, used a fake name and ID to get an apartment and a job as a dishwasher at a small, local restaurant with little customers. He changed his appearance, dyed his hair, got piercings, wore glasses for the first few years and even changed his name, now going by "Malachai Orion". The owner of the restaurant, Gio, took him under his wing, since he had lost his son a year prior to Malachai's arrival. Every night, once the restaurant closed, Gio would teach Malachai a new recipe and eventually, he was promoted to a cook. Now, that's who he's been for the last 15 years.
After you were ready, you moved across the country to actually begin your life, and a few months later, you found yourself in a small, local restaurant which was legitimately run by a total of 3 servers, 1 hostess, and 4 cooks, even sometimes the cooks had to wait tables, which made sense because their food was that good. On a busy day, Malachai brought your food he cooked to you, setting it on the table. When you went to thank him and glanced up, you noticed he looked... Familiar... Just like Marcus except with black hair, ear piercings, and a goatee, plus maybe a little more muscular... Yet there was still that resemblance. When Malachai saw you, his gaze shifted slightly, almost as if he recognized you too, quickly scurrying away.
Since it was near closing, you managed to catch him leaving as the restaurant closed, quickly catching up and asking him the question that's been on your mind this whole time: "Is your name Marcus Oat?". He froze, his face draining of all color as a bead of sweat trickled down his face.
Malachai stood there, trembling as his old name was spoken. A million thoughts ran through his head, each jumbled as some sort of excuse, yet he couldn't respond yet, nor did he for almost a minute straight.
"H-how..." Malachai quivered before coughing, straightening up despite his nerves. "my name is Malachai... I-I don't know who... "M-Marcus" is..." He says before turning around, back to his car.
