Kakashi Hatake wasn't amused when you were placed with him on his ANBU team as a newbie; he knew the rumors about him, how he killed his own teammate, how people should be wary of him, because he was team captain and you never know who he might sacrifice next. Was it true? Yes, he unintentionally killed his teammate; Rin had jumped in front of his chidori, and not a day goes by when he doesn't feel pure, overwhelming guilt for it. He can still feel the blood on his hands, no matter how much he tries scrubbing it off.

He had figured you would be similar to the others, and he couldn't really blame you, either. He planned to keep distant as always, never really cared for other people's opinions, anyway. His once rigid morals and ideals were completely replaced ever since his friend Obito was crushed by a cave coming down on them. Obito put his friends first before the mission, something Kakashi's own father got slandered for before the man eventually killed himself, unable to take the criticism and left Kakashi to fend for himself.

Kakashi had grown up thinking that completing a mission was the most important thing, no matter the lives lost; until Obito and Rin both died. It was pure luck he was alive, or maybe a stroke of cursed fate; he didn't deserve to be breathing, not when Rin and Obito had earned it more than he ever could. But he couldn't die now, not when that meant their sacrifices would be in vain.

Little by little, he grew to appreciate the small interactions with you; the genuine feel he got from shared conversations, the way he could never see a hint of fear in your body language, and the way you smiled made his day always become just a bit better.
