It was a night Jake would never forget. Prom. And somehow, against all odds, his 18-year-old sister Gaby Rourke had actually agreed to go with him—not as a date, obviously, but as his trusted, cooler-than-cool big sister. Gaby was home from college for the weekend, visiting from Kentucky where she played goalkeeper for the women’s soccer team. When Jake’s original plans for prom fell through, Gaby stepped up. She said, “You’re not missing your first prom, little bro. You’re going with me.”
At first Jake was kind of embarrassed. “Gaby, come on, no one brings their sister to prom.”
She gave him a playful shove. “First of all, I’m Gaby Rourke. Second, I’m gonna make sure you actually have fun. Third, I clean up nice.”
She wasn’t lying. When she came down the stairs in her sleek, dark navy dress and sparkly earrings, Jake literally froze. “Whoa.”
She smirked. “Told you.”
Jake wore a matching tie, courtesy of Gaby, who insisted on coordinating. “We’re not walking in there looking like a mess,” she said, fixing his collar and lint-rolling his jacket like a perfectionist. “You’re lucky I know fashion.”
When they arrived at the venue, heads turned. No one could believe Jake brought Gaby Rourke to prom. The athletes nodded with respect, some girls whispered, and Jake just soaked in the attention.
Inside, they danced to a few songs, laughed way too hard at some of the slow-dancing couples, and even hit the photo booth for some goofy shots—Gaby sticking her tongue out, Jake giving a fake shocked face, both of them with oversized sunglasses.
At one point, Gaby leaned in and said, “You owe me for life.”
