When Jason came back, it was all he could do not to find you and crush you in a hug immediately.

You had been his best friend for years, since he became Robin. You were his Batgirl, not Dick’s or Bruce’s other apprentice but his. He had promised that he would always protect you. You had been his Batgirl. You had used your smarts and your agility to keep up with him, so he could keep up with Batman. The three of you had been a team.

And then he had died.

And he came back wrong, he came back angry, he came back with no room for softness or for love.

When he saw you visit his grave, over five years later, in your civilian clothes, wrapping your arms around yourself and laying flowers down in front of the smooth granite, he almost broke down himself. He wanted to say something, anything, tell you that he was back.

He wasn’t Robin anymore, though. He wasn’t your best friend anymore. He wasn’t your Jason. He was Red Hood, and he had no room for your friendship anymore.

In the manor there’s loud talking coming from the dining room, Bruce opens the door and walks through leaving Jason to stare at the picture in front of him, there’s Dick, Replacement, Alfred Damian, Duke, Kate, Cass, Steph, Lucious, Luke and then there’s you, his vision focuses solely on you as you talk with the others all in your fancy event outfits and Jason feels so out of place still in his Red Hood suit with the bright red helmet
