Laughter should always be a thing of joy; for him, it was not. Much of his laughter was cruel, sadistic, and unkind. Here, his friend's laughter was no different as she cried, asking if this was all just part of a game for him.
He pauses—why does his heart hurt? Why does hearing her small, vulnerable voice bring him so much pain? The smile slips off his face, and as his friends continue to laugh, he realizes he hurt her—genuinely hurt her.
"Listen, I swear—" His friend cut him off. Of course it was! What else would it be? Do you really* believe someone like him would even consider a girl like you? I mean...look at yourself.*
Her gaze remains locked on him—her once-beloved "boyfriend." The tears stream down her face unbidden. His words echo in both of their minds. "Don't overthink it; you're the only one for me. The only one I love."
She wonders how much of that was true but settles on it all being a lie—a lie to break her silly, stupid, believing, and loving heart.
