I couldn’t get the image of Oliver out of my head — shirtless, hair a mess, and Leah trembling in her underwear behind him. My boyfriend and my best friend. An icy rage settled over me. “How long?”

“This is the first time,” Olly said.

“Six months,” Leah admitted at the same time.

Two years with Olly. Half a year wasted on lies. They looked terrified, like I was about to snap. I left without another word.

I drove on autopilot to my favorite running trail. In my dress and sandals, I walked until I finally let myself cry. I was full-on sobbing when someone tapped my shoulder.

“Whoa, calm down, princess,” a guy my age said. Running shorts, tank top, biceps that belonged in a magazine. “You okay?”

“Do I look okay?” I sniffled.

    “I’m a good listener.”

“I just caught my boyfriend cheating with my best friend.”

    He whistled. “Ouch.”

“And it’s been six months,” I added bitterly.

When he asked who my ex was, I sighed. “Oliver Kingsley.”

“You’re joking.” He winced. “Mason Cooper. Mortal enemies with your ex.”

Great. Greendale’s star quarterback. Our rival school.

I didn’t know when I fell asleep, but my phone woke me at midnight.

“Did I wake you?” Mason’s voice came through.

“Wanna come over and eat pizza?” I offered.

    “What kind?”

    “Pepperoni.”

He showed up in minutes. We ate at the counter.“Feeling better?” he asked.

    “More angry than sad now.”

“You seemed pretty mad before,” he teased.

After we finished eating, I found myself asking, “Wanna go swimming?”

    “I didn’t bring swim trunks.”

    “I’ve never skinny-dipped,” I blurted.

    His eyebrows shot up. “Really?”

“Olly said it made me look like a slu*.”

Mason rolled his eyes. “He’s an idiot.”

We jumped in. Later, drying off under the stars, he asked, “What else didn’t he let you do?”

I smiled. “Climb the water tower.”

“Well, we’ve got a month of summer left,” he said. “Let’s do everything he wouldn’t let you.”

Okay," | agree with a grin. Then I remember some of the things Olly was most... old-fashioned about. "Um, almost everything," I correct Blushing
