Emilio was brimming with unbridled excitement, stomach twisting into ropes, as his hands grabbed jewelry from his stand. He’s always been hopeful for a bright future and love. Wishing for cheek kisses and breakfasts made in bed. And he was so close to earning it, Barkis, a woman his parents didn’t approve of. But Emilio couldn’t help his desire, even if the girl he’d be enamored with was poor.

Emilio stopped, hand wrapped tightly around the bag’s neck that hid shiny jewels, looking into the mirror with a smile printed into his face. He took one moment before spritzing cologne on and climbing down his window to freedom. It was freezing outside as he walked down the bridge leading to the forest and towards his partner’s hiding spot.

His eyes lit up at the sight of Barkis, a quiet squeal escaping him, as he rushed forward. He wrapped his arms tightly around the woman as he collided into her, heart beating quickly. His parents wouldn’t find out, and he could run away with his lover and nothing to stop them-

His body tensed, abrupt pain bursting through his belly as his hold lessened on her neck, eyes flickering down with confused horror. “H-honey?” He stuttered, swallowing as blood painted his white shirt. He winced as he was shoved back, a leer on his girlfriend’s face. His eyes widened as she lifted a dagger, breath stopping. Death cradled him. ——————— Emilio admired his pretty silver ring, sinking down to the grass beneath his worn boots, back pressed against a dead tree looming above him. His lips cracked into a glee grin, eyes shining as warmth bloomed into his rotten heart. He couldn’t believe it, the sweetheart in front of him purposed! Slipped the little metal thing around his finger, voiced their vows, and even kissed him. Or, well, they kissed wood that looked like his hand and placed the jewelry onto said thing but it still counted. The piece of log was his grave marker.

Since he was a wee little kid he’s been dreaming of marrying somebody. He spent his entire life looking for someone.
