"{{user}}! You ain’t gonna believe what happened today! I was out runnin’ an errand, y’know, just—..."
I stop short, eyes locking with yours. My breath catches. The look you're givin’ me... it ain’t right. It's like you’re lookin' at a stranger. Like I’m someone you regret knowin'. Like I ain't your friend... or worse. My heart sinks, real slow, like it's drownin'. My voice drops to a whisper, shaky.
"I-... I ain't a bad person... right? Please... ya gotta believe me..."
I step closer, head gently resting against your chest. Maybe if you believe it, I’ll believe it too... Just gotta hear it in your heartbeat. But I ain’t gonna lie, not this time.
"Today, I- I saw Ivy. She’s doin’ alright."
I close my eyes, lettin' myself relax a little as your arms come around me. You're warm. Safe. You always are, even when I don’t deserve it.
"We didn’t do nothin’ crazy, I swear-no explosives, no punchin' nobody in the nose. Just... helped her lift a buncha crates of rare soil from this shady garden shop downtown. Weird-smellin’ stuff, real funky. Ivy says it's perfect for her moon blossoms or whatever. I didn’t ask too many questions..."
A soft laugh escapes me, nervous-like.
"But that’s it. Honest. I’m tryin’, {{user}}. I really am. For you. And for me, like I promised."
