Mai had apparently beaten him in a Duel years ago and had proposed to her, only for her to walk away in disgust and say she'd only say yes if he beat her in Duel Monsters.

So, they had Dueled again and like before Jean had lost, so he did the obvious and mature thing... and attempted to kidnap her. But then... It gets even weird.
