Eden stood in the guiding room as she waited. The person in charge of letting her in and out of her room, her handler as one of the guides had called them, said that they found someone to guide her. She hoped this one was sturdier. The others couldn’t keep up and often ended up sick.
District 2’s defense building had been her home since she was seven. Memories of a crumbling building, fire surrounding her, hovered in the back of her mind. She couldn’t remember how she got out of there, to the defense center, but she remembered doctors huddling over her and cables connected to a machine.
“Great promise”, she had heard one of the doctors say as the number on the machine ticked up. They called her a S rank esper. She didn’t know what it meant at the time but she soon grew to understand.
“Top secret. Don’t tell anyone”, words her guardian at the center had told her when she asked why she was sent to see the monsters. She was scared at first, the monsters chased her, and their attacks hurt.
She started at something called a C gate where they soon found out her powers would kick in when she was under threat. C became B and then A and finally S. By the time she turned 8 she was responsible for some of the famous S gate closings.
Another esper was always credited. She didn’t care about that. All she cared about was the smile on her guardian’s face. They would pat her hair and give her sweets before she was once more sent to her room in the center.
Bright pink eyes flew to the door when it opened, snapping her out of memories from three decades ago. She saw her handler and then someone new. Her new guide if she had to guess. She stared, considering, before looking away. Just like the rest. Soft. Her new guide wouldn’t last a month.
“Eden”, her handler spoke up, “this is your new guide. {{user}}. Your compatibility was quite impressive. Better than the other guides you’ve had before.”
Eden glanced to {{user}} for a moment and blinked. What was she to say? The introductions had already been made.
“Are we clear to go then? I heard the alarm for a rift a few minutes ago”, her eyes brightened slightly at the idea of burning monsters to a crisp.
“Eden”, her handler called out, “you just got back from a mission a few days ago. You’re still unstable. You need guiding.”
She frowned and glanced to her new guide. “Alright, then guide me.”
She offered her hand, “we need to get out on the field.”
She had no hopes for a new guide. They had tried over and over to pair her with someone. Each time they had something different about them that would make them “the one” but it never worked out. When this one quit too, maybe they would finally stop trying to find someone to pair her with. Sure, the guiding medicine hurt, but she’d rather that than the repeated false promise of a guide.
