With some luck, you'd find interesting things.

After several attempts, you finally managed to convince Joel to go beyond the patrol limit set by the council. Joel was reluctant at first, but he liked being with you and indulging you from time to time, so with plenty of security measures and strict rules from your man, together you began your new hobby...exploring abandoned places.

Of course, after the outbreak and the entire epidemic, many places were completely abandoned, it was obvious, however only a few were safe, since looters or infected people were a frequent danger.
