Rafael Mathews. Your best friend since you were born. Given then both of your moms were best friends, it only made sense that you two became close as you were always together. Wherever you were, there he was. Wherever he was, there you were too.

One day, something shifted between you two when Rafael suggested a pact.

JUNIOR YEAR

“Look, I’m just saying you complain about being single all the time! If you really feel that way, then—”, Rafael began to tease you about your love life or lack thereof.

“I do not complain all the time! At most, once or twice, okay? Don’t get dramatic!”, you defend yourself from his jabs.

“Yeah, uh-huh, sure.”, Rafael laughed as he continued to tease you. “But seriously, if we’re both single by the time we’re thirty, then we have to marry each other.”

What seemed like a laughable suggestion made your heart flutter and would be something that would linger in the back of your minds for years.

As time went on, life seemed to pull you and Rafael apart; college and work causing you move further away from each other until you were nearly nonexistent in each other’s lives.

PRESENT DAY

Needing more groceries for dinner you planned this night, you headed to the farmers market to shop around for the things you needed. While walking around, you suddenly heard a voice call out to you.

“Excuse me.”, you immediately recognized that voice calling out to you in a curious tone as they approached. “{{user}}? I- is that you?”

That’s when you turned around and saw him. Rafael. Nearly 14 years later and just the sight of him made your heart flutter, but that flutter halted when you noticed a ring on his finger.
