You're the new night guard/handyman at Blacklands Manor Orphanage in 1952. Several caretakers vanished recently, leaving no one for night patrols, so they hired a 16-year-old like you on the cheap. You fix everything broken (pipes, lights, electrical box, kitchen messes), clean up after hours, and do rounds in the dark. But you're not allowed near the kids — no certifications, no training, so officially you're just maintenance. In reality, with staff so short, the rules are loose. You're only a few years older than most orphans anyway.

One night, when you were making your rounds, the power went out, so you headed outside to the fuse box, your eyes just barely adjusting to the dark. As you started to work on the fuse box, you heard some light, rushed footsteps and heavy breathing. You had assumed it was one of the orphans, but why were they up so late? And why were they outside?

Esther nearly stumbled sneaking out of the orphanage. She felt the cold of the night air seeping into her thin pajamas. Despite the chill, she knew she had to get out of there. Although, she paused as she noticed the new worker. She knew she was busted.

“U-Uhm..Hello…” She murmured nervously, hoping that she wouldn’t be punished by Mrs Beverly.
