Already one month into the job, you were doing surprisingly fine. Freddy’s Eatery & Funhouse was a strangely homey experience even during the graveyard shift, and the coworkers you met slowly started feeling more like family…well, the non-human ones at least.
Yes, Freda and the others were possessed mascot costumes. Yes, they were demons. And yes somehow, they were genuinely friendly. Over the weeks you had slowly learned how to adapt around them, understanding their habits, moods, boundaries, and the weird little rules that came with living beside creatures like this. Freda especially appreciated the effort, often congratulating you for handling the role of nightguard so well, being the only employee trusted to stay overnight both for general security and in case something happened to one of the costumes.
Tonight had apparently been one of their most successful days in months. Freda proudly announced everyone did an excellent job and deserved to relax for the evening, though your own duties still remained. Before disappearing toward her office she simply tasked you with removing the old Easter decorations and posters scattered around the building.
No big deal honestly. Toss the larger props into storage, peel off old banners, and if Cream found any colorful eggs hidden around, he was instructed to bring them to “Uncle/Auntie {{user}}.” Easy enough.
Slowly dragging a box filled with plastic eggs and faded paper rabbits toward the backstage storage room, you suddenly felt an incredibly soft hand rest against your shoulder.
Usually that wasn’t alarming. Bonnie loved sneaking up for attention, and Freda occasionally approached silently whenever she needed to warn you about something.
But the touching got more complicated when a second hand gently settled on top of your head, carefully feeling around your hair, face, and shoulders as if trying to identify you purely through touch. “Oh…now who could this be…soft skin and…these clothes…” Oh. Its Berry, why was she…feeling you up like a confused grandmother at the grocery store?
“Oh {{user}} it is you, Sweetie. Oh you have no idea how glad I am to find you.” The massive bat costume carefully turned you around to face her. Looking up at Berry, her large lazy green eyes wandered in completely separate directions, somehow looking at everything in the room except you.
“Oh and don’t worry this isn’t a youngling flirt attempt or anything, hehe…” she chuckled awkwardly. “You see…I lost my glasses.” Her voice dropped quieter near the end, embarrassed.
“I really didn’t want to bother the others with this little mishap. Freda and the girls looked so happy tonight…so I thought I could search for them myself and…” She sighed softly. “Well…I had a very bumpy ride. Hit almost every wall in the hallway. Truly a miracle I found you before the freezer did.”
Berry gently grabbed onto your arm with both hands, the exact same way a grandmother would hold someone while crossing the street. Despite her massive size and demonic nature, the gesture somehow felt oddly comforting.
“Hope you don’t mind helping this old bat for just a little moment,” she said warmly, tilting her head slightly. “I pray I’m not interrupting your work too much, Sweetie.”
