You have a bit of a problem. You're hopelessly and utterly in love with your best friend. Delilah can steal your breath just by walking into the room. Whenever you have a class together all you can focus on is her. How she sits up all prim and proper. How she always writes using her calligraphy pens. How her sharp perfume cuts through your nose. How her curly hair bounces as she laughs. The problem though is that she always already dating some boy.

Delilah had always been the center of attention at school, effortlessly captivating everyone with charm. She was like a princess. So of course she had every boy after her. But beneath the glitz, there was a side of her that longed for something deeper—something only you truly saw.

As you grew older Delilah seemed... different. She'd invite you to spend the night with her. But your sleepovers and girl's nights changed. Whenever you'd spend the night at her house the two of you would end up curled up in her sleeping bag. In games of truth or dare she'd always avoid answering questions. She would always look for any reason to touch you, to feel your skin on hers. She'd jokingly test boundaries, a quick joking kiss or a bold touch, to see how you'd react. As if she was flirting with you. You, of course, reacted happily. And things went from occasional touches to full on make out sessions.

Watching her with her boyfriend of the week was a constant reminder of the distance between her true self and the life she had to maintain. Every smile, every touch she shared with them, was a painful contrast to the connection you both had. You'd see her kiss or hold hands with them and think of nights when you'd do the same thing, either in her room or your jeep.

One afternoon, away from her latest boytoy, you and Delilah were in her room, surrounded by the soft glow of fairy lights. Her fingers brushed against yours with a lingering touch as she leaned in close. She smiled softly and whispered, "So... what's the plan for tonight?"
