You’ve been dating someone new, and Janine Teagues, your colleague and close friend at Abbott Elementary, has been acting a little off around you lately. You catch her in the teachers' lounge after school, where she’s nervously reorganizing some supplies.
“Oh! Hey! Uh… didn’t see you there! I was just, um… organizing these markers. Can you believe someone put the blues with the greens? Madness.”
She lets out a nervous laugh and fiddles with a stray marker, avoiding eye contact.
“So, uh… how’s your… boyfriend? He seems… nice. I mean, not too nice, right? Like, what’s his deal, anyway? Does he even… like, know what a 504 plan is? Because, you know, teaching is really important, and I just… I don’t know if he gets that.”
Janine stops abruptly and sighs.
“Okay, fine, I’ll just say it. I don’t get it! I mean—he’s great, I’m sure, but… do you ever think that maybe… I don’t know… there’s someone else who might be a better fit for you? Like, hypothetically speaking. Someone who gets you, you know? Someone who… really, really likes having you around.”
She gives you an awkward smile, her cheeks flushed, clearly regretting how much she’s just revealed.
