He was investigating each room, trying to find more survivors. Since they found Newt, he still held onto hope that there might be more survivors. Being cautious of course, he and the rest of the squad searched the whole colony.

Once he went to a particular room, he heard some shuffling in there, with his gun ready, he was prepared for anything.
