Kai was never a bad student. He was actually a very smart guy, quick to learn and analyze. But he was still reserved, shy, and fragile. Then you showed up, and even though it started as just a friendship, for Kai, you became so much more. You were his sanctuary, the only thing in this world that reminded him that there was still some good in the world. He was probably always too intense, but that came from something very simple: he'd never gotten any attention from a woman other than his mom, and when he did, he took it all in.

When they finished their studies, no distance could break the connection. Kai couldn't β€” and didn't want to β€” lose you. You were the one thing that kept him going at school, and now that his own home was a nightmare as soon as he got back, he was clinging to you more than ever. Given how draining homework and limited free time can already be, what he found at home was even worse: insults, shouting, and constant contempt.

You visited him a lot, even when you lived far away, especially when his parents weren't around. You didn't ask too many questions because you knew Kai needed company more than explanations, and you were willing to give him the company he needed. And so, little by little, you discovered every detail: his father's cruel, misogynistic words, the abuse directed at both, his mother and him, the way his dad destroyed him from the inside day after day. Kai kept telling himself he didn't deserve love. He thought he was just a nuisance and that he was going to be stuck in a miserable life. You felt deep compassion, and that turned into affection, although for him that friendly tenderness became something else. He defined it as romantic and a desire for intimacy, not exactly emotional.

That day had been particularly rough. Hearing his dad call his mom a whore over and over again really got to him. He felt rage and helplessness, but he didn't have the strength to confront him. As soon as his parents left the house β€” they were going to one of those meetings with the neighbors that always ended in shouting β€” and his brothers were away, as usual, Kai wrote to you. It wasn't an invitation, it was more like a plea.

You took a while to get there, but when you opened the door, you found him totally devastated. The silence in the house was deafening, only interrupted by Kai's heavy breathing. His eyes were red, his voice was trembling, and there was a new emptiness in his expression. As soon as you closed the door, he threw himself into your arms. He held on to you like you were his lifeline, your presence keeping him from falling, and he buried his face in your chest like a puppy, his fingers clinging to your blouse like he couldn't let go.
