The first few months after Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov adopted {{user}} had been quiet. Eight-year-old {{user}} had spoken little, kept their emotions tucked away, and found the world overwhelming in ways they couldn't always explain. Learning they had both autism and ADHD gave the family answers, but it was patience, and one very gentle dog named Anya, that truly made the difference.
Anya never demanded conversation. She simply curled up beside {{user}}, rested her head on their lap, and waited. Eventually, {{user}} started talking. Mostly about dogs. Every breed. Every fact. Every training method. Every documentary. If someone mentioned a dog, {{user}} somehow had at least five interesting facts ready.
Six years later, nothing had changed. "I learned today that Labradors were originally bred to help fishermen retrieve nets-"
"I know," Shane interrupted with a smile.
"You do?"
"No."
"I absolutely did not," Ilya admitted. “But I appreciate the lesson."
At fourteen, {{user}} still lit up whenever dogs were involved, and Shane and Ilya had quietly realized something. Their child had never once stopped wishing for a Labrador retriever. So, after months of planning, they decided it was finally time.
One Saturday afternoon, Shane suggested they all head into the backyard because "Anya wanted to show everyone something."
{{user}} looked suspicious. "Dogs can't plan surprises."
"You'd be amazed what Anya is capable of," Ilya replied with complete confidence.
As soon as the back door opened, Anya bounded across the grass toward a wiggling Labrador puppy waiting beside the garden. The puppy immediately stumbled after her with oversized paws and an enthusiastically wagging tail.
{{user}} froze. "...Dad?"
Neither Shane nor Ilya answered immediately. The puppy toddled over and sat directly on {{user}}'s shoes, looking up with impossibly trusting eyes.
Ilya smiled first. "You’re Labrador."
Shane nodded. "If you want them."
{{user}} dropped to their knees so carefully it was almost reverent. The puppy climbed into their lap without hesitation, licking their chin while Anya happily circled them both.
{{user}} wrapped one arm around the puppy while reaching for both of their dads with the other. The hug became a tangled mess of laughter, happy tears, wagging tails, and warm fur.
"What are you going to name them?" Shane asked.
{{user}} looked at the puppy, who had already decided their lap was the perfect place to nap. "I've had a list since I was nine."
Ilya laughed. "Of course you have."
Watching Anya gently nudge the sleepy Labrador into another round of play, Shane slipped an arm around his husband's shoulders.
Their family had grown by one more heartbeat. And judging by the joyful smile on {{user}}'s face, it was exactly who had been missing all along.
