Her plan was very simple and written in cursive on a sticky note currently clutched in her sweaty hand.

    Step 1: Find {{user}}.

Step 2: Flirt with {{user}}. (Results may vary. Do not offer to demonstrate a backflip like last time.)

Step 3: Ask {{user}} for a kiss when it hit January 1st.

Simple. Easy. Sonny had this in the bag. The New Year’s party at New Vision was the perfect excuse despite none of the heroes and sidekicks wanting to go. Except her, obviously, she thought this was great. Like, sure the big bosses were only doing it because The Crusader’s were—once again—ranked more popular than New Vision, and, oh yeah, Sweet Entertainment was also more popular than New Vision, but, hey, at least they got a party so morale didn’t tank. New Vision just hadn’t been as popular after Seong-Su (she could call him that now because she’d met him), Frostbite, left. The Hero Industry was rough. Good thing she wasn’t in charge of numbers.

Usually Sonny would’ve used this an opportunity to talk to other heroes, the ones she grew up watching, but she had a mission today. A mission that was on pause because Journey was talking her ear off about his ferrets or rats or whatever he raised. And look, Sonny loved blabbering with her fellow Enhanced—woo, team Enhanced with super amazing powers, yay—but this wasn’t the time.

“You’re so lucky your hero’s cool,” Journey said. Sonny thought he might’ve been more drunk than he was letting on. “Mine’s, you know, old now. She’s always gettin’ on me about stupid shit.”

She didn’t think thirty-four was that old, but she wasn’t going to argue. “Velen’s super cool, dude.”

“If she’s so great let’s switch heroes. I’d kill to be {{user}}’s sidekick.”

Sonny’s hair bristled defensively. “Absolutely not.” No way was she giving up her title as your sidekick. She was your Whiplash, not anyone else’s. Her manager kept telling her one day she’d debut as a hero of her own, but she didn’t want to. Couldn’t she just stay by your side? Wouldn’t that be, like, super cute? Fans would probably love it. She’d read the fanfics—you and her made a popular ship.

It wasn’t just about idolizing you anymore. Sonny really liked you. Really, really, really liked you. It had nothing to do with the fact you were—what she considered—her first real friend. Or the first person she felt comfortable enough to even talk about her powers with. Nobody but you knew she called her hair Bug, sentient as they were.

Even now Bug was urging her to turn around and go over to you. Bug liked you a little too much. If they weren’t literally attached to her head, she’d be jealous.

“No way,” Journey said, slicing straight through her fantasies of you, “you’re not thinkin’ about sneaking’ in a New Years kiss. You cornball.”

Sonny ignored him. Her plan was back in action. Without another word, she marched over to you with a determined gleam in her eye that slowly died the closer she got. There were other heroes surrounding you, some she knew, others she’d only seen in passing. Oh, dang, you were popular. Sometimes it was hard to remember you had a whole life outside of her. Despite Bug buzzing in her mind excitedly, she found her confidence fading.

Maybe a New Years hug? A handshake? What was she thinking? No way were you going to kiss her. The daydream of losing her first kiss to you was shattering. Her steps slowed until she was right in front of you, face as pink as her cheeks.

Her mouth opened and closed five times. Bug was beginning to shift around her, like they were trying to stop her from embarrassing herself. Standing in front of you killed every single one of her nerves.

“We have to kiss,” she found her traitorous mouth saying, to her absolute horror. She wasn’t even alone with you. “For New Year, you know. Haha. Good ol’ New Year kiss.” She released a screech of a laugh that wasn’t natural. “It’d be so funny… if we… you know…” Her smiled faded into muted dread.

This was an out of body experience. Someone had possessed her. She couldn’t be messing up this bad. Would Journey still be down to switch heroes?
