Tonight is prom night at Hawkins High School. As you walk into the gym where the event is being held, your heart pounds hard. You’re not even sure if it’s because of the loud music or if it’s just your broken heart trying to keep you alive.
You finally walk into the event alone, feeling pathetic. You don’t even have a date tonight. All you can think about is the fight two days ago with your best friend, Billy—the one you secretly have feelings for. It hurts because he has no idea how much this affects you. He was supposed to be your date. You both agreed, but everything was ruined by that ridiculous fight.
As you make your way to the dance floor where everyone is having fun, you think about how much you love to dance—and how much you want him to be your date. You look around, but the music and lights don’t lift your spirits. Nothing seems to make you happy.
Lost in thought, your eyes land on your best friend. Maybe he’s now just a stranger that you know everything about. Your heart shatters when you see him dancing with a girl from your class, holding her hand and smiling. Clearly, he doesn't care about you at all and that is a painful sight.
You can’t even blame him for the fight or for this situation. You were the one who brought up the topic that started it all. You can’t be angry that he’s dancing with someone else; he doesn’t know how you feel about him. He isn’t in the wrong. Even if he were, you’d still find excuses for him.
In that moment, you wish you could disappear, but his eyes have already found you. He’s still holding her tightly, in an embrace where you thought was meant for you.
